Parent & Me Music

Suzuki Inspired, For Ages 0-4.

Suzuki Early Childhood Education (SECE) is a program in which a mixed age group of children meet weekly, building on concepts and skills laid out in the SECE repertoire while interacting with one another, their parents, and the teachers. The parent plays a central role in all activities in the belief that the parent is the child’s first and most important teacher. Through parent participation in prenatal, baby, and preschool classes, parents become partners in providing an enriched natural environment for the growth of their children.

You can learn more about SECE at the Suzuki Association’s website.

 FAQs

  • In the Suzuki philosophy, learning music is a bonding experience to be shared with the parent and child. We build a relationship between the teacher, parent, and child that is meant to last for many years. This is no different for SECE classes, so parents should expect to come to class with their child.

The question is: can that caregiver practice every day with that child? If the answer is yes, then it may be appropriate for them to bring them to SECE classes.

  • Every child and instrument is a bit different. Children generally start violin lessons with Ms. Morgan at the age of 4, but occasionally can be ready at 3 1/2, especially if the parent has experience with SECE or an older sibling is already taking lessons.

Students as young as 4 can generally begin lessons on violin, cello, and piano. Woodwind and brass instruments usually need to wait longer so the child can produce the necessary air to make a sound on the instrument.

  • A cornerstone principle of SECE philosophy believes that children learn from other children. Having infants as young as 4 months and children as old as 3 years provides the infant with the opportunity to observe the child and the child then becomes a leader for the infant. We can learn from observation and from developing fluency.
